Nikon Releases
New D3S Adding High 102,400 ISO and HD Video Recording
Melville, N.Y. (Oct 14, 2009) - Nikon Inc. announced the new FX-format D3S D-SLR. The D3S
enables new opportunities and lowlight photography with an extended ISO capability of 102,400 along with HD
video recording.
According to Nikon, the new ISO sensitivity reveals details in extremely low-light environments that were
considered impossible previously. The high ISO sensitivity is expected to help professional photographers faced
with extreme lighting challenges, such as indoor nighttime sports, spot news, wedding receptions and ambitious
nature photography. Due to the higher ISO rating it will also afford these photographers to shoot at faster action
stopping shutter speeds.
The lowlight ability of the D3S is attributed to the newly designed Nikon original 12.1-megapixel FX-format CMOS
sensor. While the pixel size and count that served the D3 were maintained for image quality, dynamic range, tonal
graduation and outstanding color, the re-engineering added versatility through broader low-noise ISO sensitivity.
The D3S now captures light and renders images with a higher signal-to-noise ratio, and unmatched dynamic range for
both stills and HD video throughout its broadened ISO range.
The D3S high ISO range can also be applied while recording HD video clips. The refined D-Movie mode for the
FX-format offers smooth 1280 x 720 video in a cinematic 24 FPS, with a new algorithm that greatly reduces the
problem of "rolling shutter" by 50% typically found on D-SLR's while panning.
Nikon has also added a couple of other features like in camera "trim" movie editing, and a new automatic image
sensor cleaning that was lacking in its predecessor the D3. Even though the frame rate, ranging from 9-11 FPS
depending on resolution settings, of the D3S remains the same as the D3, the image buffer has doubled on the new
camera.
Nikon, while adding these and other improvements to the D3S the overall size, weight, appearance and most other
features are similar to the D3.
The Nikon D3S digital SLR is scheduled to be available at Nikon authorized dealers beginning in late November
2009 at an estimated selling price of $5,199.95.
