Canon EOS and
PowerShot Cameras
From Professional to Pocket Models
The EOS camera system offers the serious armateur to the advanced professional an outstanding line of camera
bodies, lenses and accessories that provides unlimited capabilities for creative images. These camera bodies range
in price from below $500.00 to about $7,000.00. Lens
choices range from Macro, Wide-Angle, to powerful Telephoto with pricing from about $150.00 for
the standard fixed EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens to $11,999.00 for the EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM lens. ∇
My personal experience with the EOS
line has been nothing but exceptional. I have previously owned the Canon A-1 (circa 1978) and
later EOS A2 35mm. Changing over to digital, I have been using he EOS 5D, with a 36mm x 24mm (35mm full frame) CMOS
sensor, for over two years without a hitch and thousands of frames exposed. I have found the EF lens exceptional,
and the EF "L" series beyond comparison. I have made museum display quality cropped 13" x 19" prints on my Epson
R2200 that are exceptionally sharp. Although my printer can't output 16" x 20" prints, I believe the images would
be equally acceptable to that size and even much larger print sizes.

Although the fantastic Canon EOS 1DS Mark III is admittedly out of my serious ameture price range,
the EOS 5D Mark II has me drooling like a teething baby.
Canon PowerShot - Advanced Digital to Easy & Stylish pocket
cameras.
The PowerShot camera line provide easy to use compact digital cameras with a wide range of models suitable for
the beginner looking for a pocket camera to models for the more serious amateur wanting greater creative control
over their images. All PowerShot cameras come with a non-removable zoom lens ranging from 3x - 20X. These great
little cameras range in price from just $129.99 for the PowerShot A480 to $599.99 for the PowerShot SX IS.
My wife and my experience with Canon PowerShot cameras has been great too. My wife carries the PowerShot SD990 IS with a 14.7 mp, 1/1.7" sensor. Having a compact
pocket camera as a non-technical person, my wife finds it easy to use and fun to have. Being an Elementary 2rd
grade school teacher she gets beautiful candid photos of her children in class and at school events. She up-loads
these pictures to her teacher's website for all the parents to view. She also gives out great looking 4x6 "reward"
prints to the children using the PictBridge direct print capabilities when plugged into her personal classroom
printer.

Personally, I too have a Canon PowerShot camera. I have the Canon Powershot SX20 IS ISM. With the 12mp 1/2.3" sensor and the 28-560 mm
image stabilized ISM zoom lens, the camera gives me exceptionally sharp images given the considerably smaller
sensor size from my Canon EOS 5D.
With the SX20's light weight and small size, I carry this camera with me wherever I go. With its pop-up flash,
and wide range zoom lens, I'm ready and able to grab those candid, news on the spot, or event shots without having
to carry my camera bag and an assortment of lenses and accessories. Also, the video recording capability is there
at the press of the video button to record an event as it unfolds. While shooting video, the Canon SX20 also allows
me to capture single frame shots just by pressing the camera's shutter button.

Power is not a problem either. If I run out of power, I just pop in four new AA Alkaline batteries
and shoot another 340 frames. You can also use AA NiMH rechargeable batteries for 600 frames when fully charged. I
don't know how you shoot, but in my whole career I've never cranked out 340 "single shot" frames in one shoot let
alone 600 frames. Besides, on any day you go out to shoot, it's always best to have fresh batteries in the camera.
A good practice is to charge two sets of batteries just prior to going out to shoot; that way you are sure not to
run out of power.

Although, not a pocket camera, but as a relatively "light-weight," with a small zippered case and a carabiner
snap, I just hook the SX20 on my belt and I'm ready to draw and start shooting at a moments alert. I don't carry a
purse, but if I did I would just snap the carabiner to the shoulder strap and go.
Also, when using my EOS 5D the SX20 isn't far away. The SX20
is great for backup or grabing some additional, candid or snapshots while not having to record them on my 5D's
memory card.
Since our children are all grown and gone we don't have any young novice shooters in the house. Our oldest
daughter has a couple of toddlers and I'm giving them toy cameras to practice with and looking forward to the day I
can give them a entry level point and shoot camera like the Canon PowerShot A480. As they
grow, I'll move them up to something with more creative controls like the SD and then the SX models. By the time
they are in their middle teens they will have developed a "photographic eye" and they can move up even more to the
Canon EOS
family of cameras where their photographic creativity will have no limits.
